Oscar Virgilio was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is currently semi-retired from the pharmaceutical career that brought him to Canada after living in 5 countries around the globe.
He has been an aquarium aficionado hobbyist since he was five and has kept and raised freshwater and marine fishes. Oscar started his passion for fish learning and keeping while spending long hours collecting fish and plants in the Rio de la Plata area, which is rich in a variety of fish. Oscar has visited different regions of Amazonia and Manaus on several trips and recently visited several Arowana farms in Indonesia and Thailand.
With more time on his hands since retirement, he has been focussed on supporting the hobby and generating new initiatives like the organization of the First Canadian Flowerhorn Show in 2015, founding several online initiatives like UFA Canada, participating as moderator at the Arowana Canada Club forum, manager of MA ON LineTropical Fish, and administrator of Discus, Arowana, Brackish Aquariums and Freshwater Stingrays Fanatics Canada groups on Facebook.
Since 2020 is experiencing studying, learning, and keeping different brackish aquarium environments focusing on the brackish environment habitat and understanding how it functions and how to maintain it.
As a speaker, he has participated in radio engagements at the Reef and Rivers Aquarium Show. In addition, he has been invited to share presentations on Arowanas, Stingrays, Plecos, and Discus knowledge at the several GTA Aquariums club.

It’s official, May is finally here. The flowers are blooming, the birds are chirping and the temperatures are finally getting nice. Pretty soon we will all be outside enjoying our backyards and having company over for barbeques, beers and enjoying the beautiful weather.
As we know, May is our second last meeting of the year, but don’t fret we have a couple more events before the year is over. At this months meeting, we will be having Oscar Virgilio giving a presentation on brackish water, fish, and the husbandry that is associated with that type of fish keeping.
At this months meeting we will have a sign-up sheet for our annual potluck dinner that is held in June. For more information or to sign up your dish for the party contact Trish at scaasexec@gmail.com and she will get you all set up. As usual, the club will be providing drinks and pizza, but we always encourage members to bring a dish so we have a variety to choose from.
We are still accepting nominations for our upcoming election as well. So, don’t forget to contact Cindy Barrett at cindygolden2005@gmail.com for more information regarding the election. There are many positions that you can run or nominate a friend for. There are also other committee positions that are vacant and need to be filled. So, if you are willing to stand up and volunteer some time to make your club even more awesome, please do so.
Canada Day July 1 is our giant summer public auction and will be held at our new location 6944 Stanley Ave in Niagara Falls Ontario. To pre-register for our auction or just simply to get some information, please contact our auction committee at scaasauctions@gmail.com and we will be glad to get you set up. We will also be looking for volunteers for runners, and a few other little odd jobs that will get this auction running smoothly. So if you are willing to help, please don’t hesitate to contact the email address above.
With all that said, I hope we have a great end of the year as our final meetings are upon us. I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting.
Jon
The club's monthly newsletter is called the "SCAT". It contains a myriad of information including: meeting highlights, articles written by members about breeding fish, growing plants, etc..., information about our sponsors and so much more!
An afternoon would be well-spent looking over past editions and members greatly look forward to receiving the monthly copy via e-mail.
If you enjoy writing, please consider contributing to the newsletter. Articles about fish that you have kept or bred, funny or interesting aquatic experiences or related topics are great for the "SCAT". Likewise, if you enjoy drawing, please consider submitting a cartoon or illustrations of plants or fish; it's great fodder for the newsletter and will be appreciated by our editor and enjoyed by many readers. If you would like to contribute to The SCAT contact Pat Shriner VIA our contact section.
Did you know that "SCAT" is not an acronym for anything, but rather pays homage to the Scatophagus fish, which is on the club's emblem. This fish is also known as the "scat". just a bit of club trivia!

Feel free to bring any of your fish to show as there will be The Fish Of The Month, Adult Open and Junior Open classes to compete in. Good Luck

In the children’s reading section at the downtown library location the society takes care of a tank for the children. Many thanks to Phil and Cindy for taking care of this so that the children may have enjoyment seeing the fish.
Each and every year around Christmas time the club gathers up money from the club and it’s members for community care and makes a yearly donation to the organization. If you wish to make a donation please click the link below to learn how you can help.
