Who is he?
Two words can describe Tom. He is an “Animal Guy/naturalist”. He started keeping fish and reptiles at the age of 9. His first job was cleaning fish at a tropical fish store, (age 12). Local field trips started at 11, but by high school, the Carolinas to Florida were regular stops. In the early 70's Europe and West Africa were visited. By 1973 Tom started his zoo career and the summer jobs got him through university. At this time, he started working with large animals, (bears, wolves, large cats, great apes) and birds. For the next 40 years Tom worked at zoos, finally retiring as the Curator of Birds and Invertebrates from Toronto Zoo. During this time Tom travelled and studied wildlife in every continent while keeping a fish and reptile collection at home.
Tom has been retired for 10 years, but remains dedicated to studying wildlife of all kinds. Small animals (freshwater fish, reptiles and all invertebrates remain his favourites). Observing wildlife in their natural surroundings is still the best.

Hello everyone, welcome back to the start of another great year of meetings, shows and auctions with SCAAS. Doors open 7:00pm and the meeting starts at 7:30pm at our new location-Columbus Club at 6944 Stanley Ave, Niagara Falls. We are meeting in the Upstairs hall.
Don’t Forget your membership dues will be due at the September Meeting, Jon will be there to renew all memberships.
As we embark on another year, the club celebrates its 65th year as an Aquarium Society. We are Ontario's longest runnig club and even predate CAOAC! We will be doing something special to commemorate this anniversary please watch your email for updated information.
We have some fun things coming up in the fish community. Sept 15/16th we will have an aquarium on display at the CAOAC booth at the Canadian Aquatics Expo in Toronto. CAOAC is still in need of people to volunteer their time to help at the booth. If you can spare even 2-3hours, it would be greatly appreciated. This show features a Presidential tank challenge that our club will be entering. There is also a biotope contest open to the public to enter, if interested in the biotope or volunteering time please reach out the exec team at SCAASEXEC@GMAIL.COM and we can get you the information.
We also have our big Fall Auction on Saturday November 4th, 2023. Registration starts at 8am and Auction will start promptly at 10am. We will also have some vendor tables set up for our club sponsors to sell dry goods. For more information contact the auction committee at SCAASAUCTIONS@GMAIL.COM
I look forward to serving as SCAAS club president this year, and seeing everyone back at the September meeting.

The club's monthly newsletter is called the "SCAT". It contains a myriad of information including: meeting highlights, articles written by members about breeding fish, growing plants, etc..., information about our sponsors and so much more!
An afternoon would be well-spent looking over past editions and members greatly look forward to receiving the monthly copy via e-mail.
If you enjoy writing, please consider contributing to the newsletter. Articles about fish that you have kept or bred, funny or interesting aquatic experiences or related topics are great for the "SCAT". Likewise, if you enjoy drawing, please consider submitting a cartoon or illustrations of plants or fish; it's great fodder for the newsletter and will be appreciated by our editor and enjoyed by many readers. If you would like to contribute to The SCAT contact Pat Shriner VIA our contact section.
Did you know that "SCAT" is not an acronym for anything, but rather pays homage to the Scatophagus fish, which is on the club's emblem. This fish is also known as the "scat". just a bit of club trivia!

Feel free to bring any of your fish to show as there will be The Fish Of The Month, Adult Open and Junior Open classes to compete in. Good Luck

In the children’s reading section at the downtown library location the society takes care of a tank for the children. Many thanks to Phil and Cindy for taking care of this so that the children may have enjoyment seeing the fish.
Each and every year around Christmas time the club gathers up money from the club and it’s members for community care and makes a yearly donation to the organization. If you wish to make a donation please click the link below to learn how you can help.
